Karaoke (HKPAX)
Work in ProgressArts Pavilion, West Kowloon Cultural District

Karaoke is the latest performance created by Rooftop Productions, performed by our co-artistic director, Michelle Li. Based on Michelle’s real experiences growing up in Hong Kong, the performance uses songs to take the audience on a journey through the city’s modern history. From the Canton opera repertoire she heard from her mother, to the children’s choir she sang with in the 1997 handover ceremony, we see the development of Hong Kong through the lens of Michelle’s personal connections with family, culture, and identity.
We are now looking for collaborators and partners, hoping that the full version of this work can be presented on different stages around the world to express the uniqueness of local art and Hong Kong's multiculturalism. Compared with our other works, this program has a simpler structure, making it easier to perform in other places.
The work is created in both English and Cantonese, and can be performed entirely in English or entirely in Cantonese. The work is presented fully surtitled, making it accessible to different audiences.
The version presented at HKPAX 2024 is a 20 minute fragment of the 1 hour version.
