# Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies

## Description
The Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies (HKFDS) was established in 1984 as a joint body of local theatre groups and practitioners. Its mission is to unite members of Hong Kong’s theatre community, to reflect and express views that support the development of the local theatre scene, and to promote exchange and collaboration with external counterparts. It also aims to advance theatre development and organize a wide range of activities for audiences at different levels, theatre enthusiasts, and professional practitioners, including:

- Connecting members of the theatre community, producing stage performances, and creating opportunities for mutual exchange and artistic development;
- Organizing the Hong Kong Drama Awards to review local stage productions of the year, recognize achievements, and honor contributions by theatre practitioners;
- Hosting seminars on various themes to engage with the development of arts and culture in Hong Kong;
- Conducting lectures, play readings, and workshops to enable broader audience participation and engagement in different forms;
- Organizing drama festivals and showcases to encourage playwriting and promote theatrical performance, while providing platforms for students and amateur groups to grow;
- Publishing theatre-related materials to promote the art form, enhance public understanding, and preserve valuable references for local performing arts culture;
- Presenting Chinese-language theatre festivals, bringing together practitioners from different Chinese-speaking regions through performances and academic forums to celebrate achievements and explore future development;
- Acting as an intermediary with the government to coordinate theatre promotion initiatives and projects that benefit the industry.
